Paint with Gina Brown: Figures

Hosted by NEXTdoor Studios

Join us as we learn and have fun with Alabama artist Gina Brown!

Gina Brown is an accomplished oil painter with works in many notable galleries. A full list of her awards and accomplishments can be seen here. She teaches workshops all over the Southeast, and they fill up fast! You can read more about her story here.

The FIGURES workshop is a 2-day oil painting workshop for more advanced artists that want to learn a more simplified way to paint the figure, using a style of painting that results in loose and free paintings. The focus will be learning to first simply the drawing of the figure, then applying fresh bold strokes while painting with confident intention. Learn to paint in a simple, more childlike way, while learning to enjoy the desire to create within. The workshop will consist of demonstrations with step by step explanation and exercises that will support this style of painting. Plenty of painting time will be provided with one on one instruction and assistance.

Gina will provide several photos to choose to paint from, but if you have a photo you want to paint, please make sure the photo meets the following criteria:
  1. The photo contains only one figure. (If more than one figure is in the photo, we will only work on one in this workshop).
  2. The photo is taken at the level of the figure. (Many times if an adult is looking down at a child, for example, a foreshortened figure results.)
  3. Definite light and shadow are present. (If the subject is "backlit" and all one value, or if the photo doesn't have good light, it is more difficult to paint.)
  4. Preferably, the subject needs to be facing away from the camera. It is fine to paint a profile or a face but we will not be painting portraits. Please see Gina's Instagram account or Facebook page to see sample paintings completed at previous figure workshops, along with demos, to see sample poses.
There will be two full demonstrations (one each morning). In the afternoon Gina will be guiding us in a few drawing and painting exercises on the first day. We will work on painting the larger painting the second day. The goal is to take home one completed (or nearly finished) painting by the end of the workshop.

Due to Gina's popularity with our area artists, we are offering TWO dates to choose from. The workshop content will be the same. You just need to choose which dates you want to attend.
